Welcome.  Technically I am welcoming myself as there is no one else reading this blog, but for the time being that is just fine.

First off a little bit about myself and what I am doing on here.

I received my first Holmes edition Basic D&D set in the winter of 79, my mother (bless her heart) knew that I loved to read, she knew I loved to read fantasy type books and when she saw this at a K-Mart she knew it was something I would like.  Well it had a wizard and dragon on the cover anyhow so I really think that was as far as that thought went.  Which when I think about it was pretty cool of her and my Dad to allow me to have it.  You have to remember that back then the full might of the Church/Media and most parent groups were telling everyone that D&D was the devils tool.  It was a game, that along with KISS records and backward masking would teach children all about black magic and demon worship.  So for them to let me have this, and my parents were not stupid, nor uneducated bumpkins, they knew what was being said about the game and they did not care.  Or I should say they cared enough to allow me to make my own decisions and take a chance on me making the right ones.
I played that basic edition for at least a year before I found out that there was another version out, the Moldvay edition.  This one took the game even further and opened up new areas that the Holmes edition limited.
So me and my brothers played and played and I am sure we butchered the entire genre as I was a DM who had never played before, so what did I know about it.  I remember extreme Monty Haul campaigns and meteoric character levels.  But more importantly I remember the fun of sitting on the floor, all of us gathered around while we rolled our little green crappy dice (we only had one set).
So then fast forward to a year or so later and a cousin form the big city shows up to annoy us.  He played a few games with us then starts to regale us with stories of this mystical new D&D version called Advanced D&D.  He talked about vorpal swords and Tiamat and basically told us we were still babies if we played basic.
Well that resulted in him getting a trip out to the pasture where he quickly learned not to pee on electric fences, but after the dust settled (and he returned home) we immediately went out searching for the new Advanced edition.
I started playing Advanced D&D sometime in 1981, and I have continually played D&D in one form or another or other roleplaying games since.  There was a time during the war that I thought I would need to take a break, but not really as I had the genius to pack my dice and old Moldvay copy in my ruck and carried that thing all over Saudi, Kuwait and Iraq.  Many a day was passed sitting in a sandbagged bunker killing orcs and rescuing princesses.
Cthulhu, Traveller, 2300AD, Cyber Punk, Holy Lands, Ars Magica, Harn, and many others have come and gone, tried, thrown out, and melded to give me many years of enjoyment.  Over 30+ years of roleplaying to be exact.
Now I am a parent of some great kids and we love to gather around the table together to enjoy a night of roleplaying.  Very few parents get to pass on their favorite pastime to their kids, and have them enjoy it just as much.
So this blog will be a collection of my thoughts and musings.  Currently the family is focused on two games primarily Basic Fantasy and Holy Lands.  Two medieval roleplaying games (and both free I might add).  We are also dabbling in Cthulhu as two of the kids are into reading Lovecraft, but I think we will need to bring this one up to modern times as the learning curve for the 1920's is just a bit much for all of them.
So for those of you reading this, and I expect that will only amount to my family and that rare individual who hits the "I feel Lucky" button on the Google search page, enjoy your stay and I hope you find something useful or at least entertaining while you are here.
